Home Tour 2009 - Soggy but Successful!
The 2009 RWENA Home Tour was a delight!  Thanks again to our wonderful Co-chairs and to our neighbors who opened their homes and gardens for all to admire. Thanks to the volunteers who coordinated, answered questions, made change, requested wet umbrellas be left on the porch, sold ads, wrote the tourbook tidbits, arranged for trolleys & benches, and hosted the parties.  Even the rain couldn't dampen the annual fun, excitement and neighborhood friendliness on Tour Weekend!

Here are a few photos to share - enjoy!

The 31st Annual Richland-West End Home and Garden Tour is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3, 2009, and will run from noon until 5:00 p.m. each day. Tickets are $12/adult and $5/children under 12.  Tickets may be purchased at any tour home and feature a complimentary Home Tour booklet full of interesting information and a map of all tour locations as well as the public restroom facilities. Free parking is available at the West End Church of Christ parking lot (recommended) as well as on the street.  Free trolley service will be available between the tour homes.  Many folks enjoy walking from home to home on our sidewalks - be sure to wear your walking shoes!  Eight homes + 4 separate gardens (7 total gardens) will be on the tour.  (See the map and tour addresses below).

Home Tour posters by Hatch Show Print will be available for sale at all sites along the tour. This year we're also featuring 31st Annual RWNEA Home Tour Blend coffee (fair-trade, organic, air-roasted) available for sale ($10/bag) in regular, decaf and hazelnut. Information for RWENA Residents:

The Pre-Tour Party will be held 7:00 Friday, May 1st. All neighbors are invited to attend that party for $30 per person, which includes a wonderful meal and generous libations and your Tour booklet/ticket to the tour (a $12 value).  The Post-Tour Party will be held Sunday, May 3rd at 6:30pm.  Tour volunteers -- meaning docents, homeowners, anyone who helped with the tour -- are invited to attend this outstanding party.  Did we mention free food and drinks?  That's reason enough to sign up to help!

“How may I help?”

    • Volunteer to greet visitors!  It’s a small time commitment and a great way to meet more of your neighbors.  We need over 150 volunteers in the tour homes. Please offer to take a shift (11:45-2:30 or 2:15-5) on either Saturday, May 2, or Sunday, May 3, by contacting Volunteer Coordinator Russelle Bradbury. We need so many volunteers that we will come looking for you unless we hear from you first.  So get in touch soon to let us know whether you can or cannot volunteer for this important job.  If you can work, let us know which day(s) and shift(s) you prefer.   Did we mention that it is a fantastic way to meet tons of neighbors?  And you don't have to do anything but smile.

    • Bake something delicious and nutritious for the Bake Sale!   Susan Bailey (383-7515) and Judy Filson (385-5123) are heading up the sale and can use all the cakes, pies, cookies and muffins you can conjure!  Let them know you are willing, and they’ll advise you what baked treats they most need.

       • Spread the word!  Tell friends and strangers to come on over on May 2-3 to experience the conviviality of life in the Richland-West End Neighborhood!

It takes a village to put on a home tour.  We will all benefit from the proceeds raised by this popular event. Each year the funds raised by the Tour help pay for the tree-planting program and neighborhood events such as the Annual Fall Picnic and the Street Dance, and provide funds if and when the neighborhood needs legal representation to protect our interests.  Further, Tour profits have made possible grants to our schools, the donation of playground equipment for Elmington Park, and sponsorship of the McCabe Little League softball team. A percentage of the 2008 Home Tour profits were donated to the Community Foundation to help people whose homes were damaged by storms.  Perhaps one of the most meaningful ways we "profit" from the Home Tour is by getting to know each other and building our sense of neighborhood and community.  The smiles, fun, great food and fellowship during this exciting annual event are not to be missed.  In one way or another, we all benefit from the Tour, so please call or e-mail today to volunteer.  We thank you in advance for your help.
